The Big Thrill Discusses THE FBI MURDERS with Lee Gimenez
An FBI agent is murdered. Then a U.S. ambassador is killed. Next, a federal judge is assassinated. Erin Welch, the Assistant Director of the FBI, suspects a group of rogue FBI agents are behind the criminal conspiracy murdering innocent Americans. Erin hires John (J.T.) Ryan, a decorated war hero and a private investigator, to find and expose the rogue FBI agents. As Ryan delves into the investigation, he learns the shocking truth: Corrupt elements within the FBI will stop at nothing, including murder, to achieve their evil agenda. Can Ryan and Erin stop the criminal conspiracy before they themselves are murdered?
Lee Gimenez recently spent some time with The Big Thrill discussing his latest adventure thriller, THE FBI MURDERS.
Can you pinpoint a moment or incident that sparked the idea for this book?
I think reading the news headlines about the FBI over the last several years was what sparked me to write this book. The story is told through the eyes of Erin Welch, an Assistant Director of the FBI, and the man she hires to covertly investigate the FBI, John (J.T.) Ryan. As Ryan and Erin secretly investigate the Bureau, they learn that a rogue group of FBI agents will stop at nothing, including murder, to carry out their criminal agenda.
Were there any particular books, movies, or songs that were knocking around in your head while you were writing this one?
My favorite authors, writers that I read on a regular basis, provide me with ideas and topics for my own novels. These authors include Brad Thor, David Baldacci, Ace Atkins, Lee Child, Robert Crais, Jack Carr, Joseph Finder, and Steve Berry.
When you first created your protagonist for this book, did you see an empty space in crime lit that you wanted to fill? What can you share about the inspiration for that character?
Yes, I wanted to create a character that was multi-faceted. John (J.T.) Ryan is a former Special Forces soldier who is now a private investigator. He’s a tough, take-no-prisoner type of guy, but he also has a humorous, wisecracking side. I use that humor to relieve the tension of the deadly situation he deals with on a daily basis. I think too many thrillers these days are so deadly serious that people need a character that can make them laugh a bit.
In addition to a great read, what do you hope readers will take away from this story?
I think the main takeaway from this novel relates to the plot. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the largest law-enforcement organization in the USA. And for the most part, it’s a shining example of bravery and fidelity. But the Bureau has so much power, that if it’s not used correctly, American citizens become powerless to stop overreach by this government organization.
What can you share about what you’re working on next?
I am currently working on a plot line for my next book, which will be my 19th novel. Like THE FBI MURDERS, this new book will be a J.T. Ryan Thriller. I expect this new novel will be published in 2024.
