When young Davy Crockett returns home after a long absence, he finds that many of his town’s hunters have gone missing. Being a skilled hunter himself, Davy knows that the only time hunters disappear is when they are being hunted by something more skilled than them. Making it his responsibility to find out what is happening, Davy searches the local forest, and what he finds is something he has never encountered before: dinosaurs.

Kevin James Breaux recently spent some time with The Big Thrill discussing his latest thriller, YOUNG DAVY CROCKETT: THE WILD FRONTIER WITH DINOSAURS:

What attracts you to this book’s genre?

I love historical fiction, but I was challenged to write something in the YA genre by Jonathan Maberry. He said to give YA/MG horror a try, and I did my best.

What was the biggest challenge this book presented? What about the biggest opportunity?

Stepping out of my comfort zone. I normally do not write YA.

How does this book make a contribution to the genre?

It is educational too.

Was there anything new you discovered, or that surprised you, as you wrote this book?

I learned more about history and the life of Davy Crockett.

No spoilers, but what can you tell us about your book that we won’t find in the jacket copy or the PR material?

It has sci-fi elements.

What authors or books have influenced your career as a writer, and why?

I like the early Dragonlance books a lot. They shaped my childhood as a reader. The characters were very engaging for me at that time.

What’s the one question you wish someone would ask you about this book, or your work in general? And please answer the question too!

I wish they would ask me about the main characters in my UF series. I love them so much and can talk about them all day.
