As the temperature drops, the body count rises.

Firefighters race to put out a blaze at a remote farmhouse. They discover two young girls alone in the house.

Their mother is gone—and in her place is the dead body of a man, frozen naked in the fetal position. Two chess pieces made of ice have been left on the doorstep.

Then it happens again.

D.E. White recently spent some time with The Big Thrill discussing her latest thriller, THE ICE DAUGHTERS:

Which took shape first: plot, character, or setting?

In this case it was The Ice Daughters themselves. I watched a harrowing documentary on WW2, and the idea came from there.

What was the biggest challenge this book presented? What about the biggest opportunity?

Balancing the fact with the fiction. The thread of true crime had to be accurate but also to be woven into the main storyline. The opportunity to use the setting of snow and ice as almost another character.

How does this book make a contribution to the genre?

It’s a true crime thriller/police procedural, with a domestic element.

Without spoilers, are there any genre conventions you wanted to upend or challenge with this book?

My protagonist is happy and in love in her home life, which I think is unusual in most crime thrillers I have read recently!

No spoilers, but what can you tell us about your book that we won’t find in the jacket copy or the PR material?

It was written during the first lockdown, when I was struggling with homeschool and forcing the words onto the page to meet my deadline!
