The Big Thrill Recommends: THE SUMMER OF LOVE AND DEATH by Marcy McCreary

Recommendation by Ellen Quint

Book Cover: THE SUMMER OF LOVE AND DEATHAuthor McCreary masterfully intertwines the narratives of a contemporary murder set in 2019 with the long-ago crimes of a deceased serial killer. Detective Susan Ford finds herself dealing with a new partner, Jack Tomelli, as she leads the investigation into the murder of the director of a summer stock theater production of Murder on the Orient Express. The positioning of the body eerily mirrors the modus operandi of the serial killer active half a century ago.

Set in the scenic Catskills, NY, where the iconic Woodstock festival took place on Max Yasgur’s farm in 1969, this third installment of the Ford Family series introduces an intriguing historical backdrop. Susan enlists the help of her father, retired Detective Will Ford, who was part of the original investigation into the serial killer’s crimes. For some, the late ’60s are ancient history; for others, they evoke nostalgia for a time of peace, love, and music. McCreary’s clever integration of Will Ford’s memories provides a rich, evocative context that will resonate with those familiar with the era.

The theater setting offers a plethora of suspects and potential motives, creating a labyrinthine plot full of twists and turns that will keep readers engaged. As this is a Ford Family book, the narrative not only follows Susan and Will but also delves into the investigation by Susan’s fiancé, Ray, of a recent woman’s murder. Are the murders of this young woman in any way related to the murder at the theater?

McCreary deserves commendation for her sensitive portrayal of Susan’s mother, Vera, who is showing signs of dementia. This subplot sheds light on the emotional and psychological challenges faced by individuals and families dealing with this condition. In an author’s note, McCreary explains her decision to include this storyline, adding depth and real-world relevance to the novel.

Those new to the series will find sufficient backstory to understand the motivations of the recurring characters and their relationships while returning fans will appreciate the continued development of the familiar central figures. With its compelling characters and tense scenes, this book is a great addition to the Ford Family series.
