Liz Alterman’s THE HOUSE ON COLD CREEK LANE introduces the reader to a pregnant woman, Laurel West, whose husband has just told her their offer was accepted for their dream house. How can this be, she wonders, until her husband quickly reprimands her for her negativity. Stop doubting; revel in the good news, he insists.

However, something seems off about the home as soon as Laurel walks into the living room. A tingle all over her skin begs her to get out, but she’s not sure what to do. If breastfeeding and sleepless nights were not part of her routine, perhaps the worrisome wife could be the social butterfly her husband wants her to become.

Eventually, Laurel eases into motherhood with a little more confidence—even attempting to dress up and let her guard down slightly. What she doesn’t know is Corey’s watching her. As the plot quickens and Alterman drops hints about Corey’s connection to the West family, it’s anyone’s guess if this thirtysomething will approach the woman whose house carries a secret. Or not. The alternative is to focus on recklessly navigating her way to justice.

Maybe both can happen. But at what cost? Thriller fans should add this one to their list.
