Can you pinpoint a moment or incident that sparked the idea for this book?

I wanted to write a story specifically with Stallone and Schwarzenegger in mind. Or characters like them anyway. Plus I’m intrigued with the idea of a bunch of people trapped in a relatively small area with a blood-thirsty killer on the loose. And there’s no escape.

A novel is such a major undertaking; there’s the writing of it, of course, then you’re spending months and months revising, polishing, and then promoting it. How did you know this was the book you wanted to spend the next couple of years on?

I wrote this one for pure fun and entertainment for myself. Sometimes, as a writer, you don’t need to think about what an audience wants to read. That’s insane since things change so fast in our hyper times. I deduced that if I was entertaining myself and having fun, the readers would too.

Were there any particular books, movies, or songs that were knocking around in your head while you were writing this one?

I kept thinking Jaws meets Cocaine Bear meets Snakes on a Plane. But my monster would be an almost prehistoric alligator who lives in the swamps of South Florida, is entirely pissed about a new private super-max being built on her feeding grounds, and now seeks revenge.
