Terri Greening recently sat down with The Big Thrill to discuss her latest paranormal thriller, THE COPPER ISLE GHOSTSLAYER.

A novel is such a major undertaking; there’s the writing of it, of course, then you’re spending months and months revising, polishing, and then promoting it. How did you know this was the book you wanted to spend the next couple of years on?

I wanted to write a novel about an everyday character trying to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles to free herself and those she loved from a difficult situation.

When you first created your protagonist for this book, did you see an empty space in crime lit that you wanted to fill? What can you share about the inspiration for that character?

I hope I added to the literature that already exists. Layla is an exceptionally perceptive character. I wanted to explore the gap between the psychic world and the general world with a character who experienced both.

Can you pinpoint a moment or incident that sparked the idea for this book?

I read a story about a shipwreck long ago of a ship carrying bags of gold, and I wondered what would happen if someone found it.

Were there any particular books, movies, or songs that were knocking around in your head while you were writing this one?

I thought about movies and novels with ghosts in them.

In addition to a great read, what do you hope readers will take away from this story?

I hope readers will root for Layla and draw their own strength from her determination. I hope they admire the lengths she goes to and the internal character traits she draws on to try to save someone she loves.

What can you share about what you’re working on next?

I’m working on another suspense novel.
