R. Barri Flowers recently spent some time with The Big Thrill discussing his latest romantic suspense, CHRISTMAS LIGHTS KILLER.

Can you pinpoint a moment or incident that sparked the idea for this book?

I would have to say that the spark for this novel came from enjoying the festivities of the Christmas season and imagining have to deal with a serial killer on the loose right in the middle of the holiday and how it might all play out in a novel of romantic suspense.

A novel is such a major undertaking; there’s the writing of it, of course, then you’re spending months and months revising, polishing, and then promoting it. How did you know this was the book you wanted to spend the next couple of years on?

My instincts told me this was a great fit for this miniseries and I went with that in creating a captivating holiday romantic suspense novel.

Were there any particular books, movies, or songs that were knocking around in your head while you were writing this one?

I did find myself singing some of the classic Christmas songs as inspiration when writing the story.

When you first created your protagonist for this book, did you see an empty space in crime lit that you wanted to fill? What can you share about the inspiration for that character?

My protagonist, Detective Annette Lynley, filled my thoughts right from the start, as a strong-willed, capable, down to earth, and romantic who could more than hold her own with the male lead, State Trooper Hamilton McCade.

In addition to a great read, what do you hope readers will take away from this story?

That it is the second book of an amazing miniseries and gives the readers much to look forward to reading in the next book and the one after that, and so forth, in the six-book series that revolves around an incredible law enforcement family.

What can you share about what you’re working on next?

Murder in the Blue Ridge Mountains (The Lynleys of Law Enforcement Book 3). In it, the discovery of a body in the Blue Ridge Parkway, becomes personal when special agent Garrett Sneed is forced to work the case with law enforcement ranger Madison Lynley, his ex-girlfriend. But when another homicide reveals a possible link to his mother’s unsolved murder, Garrett is out for blood. As a cold case escalates into a murder spree, he must stop a serial killer who has now targeted Madison…
