Can’t Go Back by Debra Webb
The past and the present collide in the final installment of USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb’s Devlin & Falco series, threatening everything these two detectives care about.
Birmingham detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco arrive at the scene of a double homicide to discover that nothing makes sense. A woman and her child are dead, and though the husband says he killed them, the evidence says otherwise. Why would a man confess to unspeakable murders he didn’t commit?
What starts as an open-and-shut case explodes into a web of new leads. Devlin and Falco get to work tracking down every single one, including a disturbing connection between the murders and Falco’s dark past.
Debra Webb recently spent some time with The Big Thrill discussing her latest thriller, CAN’T GO BACK:
Which took shape first: plot, character, or setting?
Detective Luke Falco’s character has evolved over the series, and this story is his. I had to write it!
What attracts you to this book’s genre?
I love mysteries, thrillers, and suspense. Always have. Thrusting characters into danger and deep emotional turmoil reveals everything.
What was the biggest challenge this book presented? What about the biggest opportunity?
I knew going in this was the final book of the series, and ensuring that all the storylines were tied up was essential. Also, it gave me the opportunity to foreshadow the coming future for the lead characters.
How does this book make a contribution to the genre?
Detective Falco’s rise from bad cop to good cop and his personal redemption.
Was there anything new you discovered, or that surprised you, as you wrote this book?
The transformation from Falco’s past to his present self.
No spoilers, but what can you tell us about your book that we won’t find in the jacket copy or the PR material?
The closeness of the cast of characters who have developed over the course of this three-book series.
What authors or books have influenced your career as a writer, and why?
Too many to name, but in particular James Patterson and Lisa Gardner.
What’s the one question you wish someone would ask you about this book, or your work in general? And please answer the question too!
Q: After more than 160 books, do you ever tire of creating new characters and storylines?
A: NEVER! I love creating new settings and characters and thrusting them into the worst possible scenario!
Is there a question that you feel is important to you or your novel? Write it in below but be sure to answer it too!
Q: Will there ever be more Devlin & Falco books?
A: Never say never. Sometimes characters just won’t leave you alone until you bring them back to the page.
