Astonishing Heroes: Shades of Justice by Gary Phillips
Even though some of the stories in this collection can be labeled in the super-hero genre, crime fiction fans will enjoy The Envoy, an anti-hero. He’s a high rolling hitman plucked from Hell only if he kills for Heaven. Then there’s Onyx Adams, a tough, kung-fu’ing Afro-wearing female private eye. There’s also The Silencer, a Vietnam vet who returns to his hometown but finds the war goes on when he’s injured in a fire bombing and the woman he loves is killed. And seeming sell-out agent provocateur American Black enacts an agenda all his own against the evildoers.
“Everything you’d expect from a Gary Phillips story collection– solid, kick-ass pulp.”
Bobby Nash, Pulp Ark award winner
ASTONISHING HEROES is available from iPulpFiction and Amazon.

Weaned on the images of Kirby and Steranko in comic books, and Hammett and Himes in prose, Gary Phillips also draws on his experiences ranging from community organizer, teaching incarcerated youth, to delivering dog cages in writing his tales of chicanery and malfeasance.
